Library Automation

The Central Library of KKHSOU is fully automated with SOUL 2.0 ILMS (Integrated Library Management System). The process of library automation in Central Library, KKHSOU began in 2011. To give pace the circulation system and theft detection, Central Library of KKHSOU has integrated RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) Technology with the help of Daphne Systems Pvt Ltd from 2014.

Nature of the ILMS

SOUL 2.0 is a state-of-the-art ILMS designed and developed by the INFLIBNET Centre based on requirements of college and university libraries. It is an user-friendly software developed to work under client-server environment. SOUL 2.0 is compliant to international standards such as MARC 21 bibliographic format, Unicode based Universal Character Sets for multilingual bibliographic records and NCIP 2.0 based protocols for electronic surveillance and control.

Following are the features of SOUL 2.0

UNICODE based multilingual support for Indian and foreign languages;
Compliant to International Standards such as MARC21, AACR-2, MARCXML;
Compliant to NCIP 2.0 protocol for RFID and other related applications especially for electronic surveillance and self check-out & check-in;
Client-server based architecture, user-friendly interface that does not require extensive training;
Support online copy cataloguing from MARC21 supported bibliographic database;
Provides freedom to users for generating reports of their choice and format along with template and query parameters;
Provides facility to allows users to save the reports in various formats such as Word, PDF, Excel, MARCXML, etc.;
User-friendly OPAC with simple and advanced search;
Supports data exchange through ISO-2709 standard;
Strong region-wise support for maintenance through regional coordinators;
Strong online and offline support by e-mail, chat and through dedicated telephone line during office hours; and
Available at an affordable cost with strong institutional support.

Future plan for Library Automation

Central Library of KKHSOU is planning to change the ILMS package, i.e. SOUL 2.0 to an Open Source ILMS package named Koha in near future. Koha is regarded as the best Open Source ILMS package in the Library arena by the experts.
